What to prepare

Swiss commercial registers are kept at cantonal level; the federal office makes a central index accessible through Zefix. Prepare the exact registered name and, if available, the UID and canton of registered office. The index helps identify the legal entity, but a company’s trade name or branch address can still lead to the wrong result.

How to search the official register

Open Zefix and search the name or identifier, refining by canton if needed. Compare the registered office, address, legal form and available identifiers. Use the result to determine which cantonal register holds the record and where an extract or historical publication can be obtained.

Interpret the result carefully

The index is updated regularly but a brief result is not a substitute for a document requested by a bank. An entity may appear with a name in several languages, while similarly named businesses exist in different cantons. Check status and the exact entity before relying on a record.

Which document do you need?

If the recipient needs a signed extract or confirmation of representation, specify this separately from a Zefix link. Provide the UID, canton and legal name with your enquiry. Browser JavaScript may be needed to use the interactive Zefix search.

If a search is inconclusive

If a name appears in several cantons, compare UID and registered seat before following a result to the canton. A branch may have a different location from the main company. If the interactive Zefix page does not load, check browser JavaScript and try the federal information page; avoid concluding that an entity is absent from a technical loading error.
