What to prepare
The New Zealand Companies Register covers companies incorporated or registered in New Zealand. Prepare the exact legal name, company number or New Zealand Business Number (NZBN). The NZBN helps identify a business, but an advertising name or a director’s personal name is not a substitute for confirming the correct company.
How to search the official register
Open the Companies Register and search by name, company number or NZBN. Compare the resulting registered name, number, current status and available addresses. The official guidance also describes searches involving a director or shareholder; do not rely on a name match alone where several people or entities may be involved.
Interpret the result carefully
A record of an overseas company registered in New Zealand is not the same as incorporation of a New Zealand company. Review the entity type before ordering documents. Registration data also cannot prove that a business holds a financial service provider status or another permission; those registers have separate search services.
Which document do you need?
If the recipient wants a company extract or incorporation document, determine the exact product and whether it must be current. Share the company number or NZBN, plus the purpose of the request, when asking for assistance.
If a search is inconclusive
If you find an overseas company, read its New Zealand registration category before treating it as a locally incorporated company. Where an NZBN is provided, use it alongside the company number to resolve similar names. Check whether the purpose concerns company existence, directors, a shareholder record or financial-service authorisation; each can require a different search or document.
