Distinguish BRN from an older company number

Hong Kong's Companies Registry uses the Business Registration Number, or BRN, as the key identifier under its Unique Business Identifier arrangements. Older documents may show a CR No. Do not assume these are interchangeable search fields. The Registry provides a CR No./BRN mapping function for relevant earlier entities.

Prepare the full legal name and both numbers if known. Copy English or Chinese names from the documents rather than translating a brand yourself. A shop or website name may belong to another entity.

Follow the e-Search route

  • Open the official e-Services Portal.
  • Choose e-Search rather than a filing service.
  • Search using the supported identifier or legal name.
  • Use CR No./BRN Mapping if an older company number is all you have.
  • Match the result to the contractual entity before selecting documents.

The Registry allows company searches as an Unregistered Online User. This does not make every report or document free; check the terms of the information product you select.

Select documents for their intended use

Basic information may be sufficient for initial identification. A bank, transaction adviser or overseas authority may need a specified official copy instead. Clarify certification and acceptable issue dates before placing an order.

A company record alone does not prove authorisation for a regulated activity or establish the authority of the person contacting you. For assistance, provide the English or Chinese name, BRN or CR No., required document and destination country. The LegalRegistr guide helps frame the request; the actual registry search takes place on the official service.
